stars

I was asked to create stars for winter decorations for the Chicago History Museum. Not just any stars – “Chicago stars”, the type shown on the Chicago flag. They needed to be lightweight so they could be hung with minimal effort or support. Simple but effective.

6-pointed Chicago stars cut from foam
8, 12 and 16 inch diameter foam stars. I used 1/2″ rigid wall insulation and cut them on a scroll saw.
foam stars painted white before painting with metallics
After a base coat of white, they’re ready to airbrush
More than 30 stars in various stages of being painted.
Silver stars drying between coats of paint. An airbrush was essential for a uniform finish.
Gold foam stars drying between coats of paint.
Metallic acrylic paint applied with an airbrush for a uniform finish.
